Give thanks for a New Year, Obasanjo charges Nigerians

The Story
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in a new year message, has urged Nigerians to be thankful to God for His mercies.

The duty of Thanksgiving.
Obasanjo, at the annual thanksgiving service of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ogun State Chapter, explained that gratitude is part of our duties and we must never cease to give thanks. “It is our duty to give thanks to God. You will be the most ungrateful person if you do not perform the duty of giving thanks to God. In all circumstances, give thanks. Therefore, if you fail to give thanks, you are failing a very significant duty of yours as a Christian", he said.

What else did he say?
Speaking at the service which held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, he reiterated the fact that the year 2020 was an unusually challenging one with the coronavirus pandemic that gravely impacted the world. “Last year 2020 was a very challenging year not only for us in Nigeria, not only for us in Africa, but for the whole world", he said. “And if God gives you that grace, to still remain on earth, maybe for a purpose and I believe part of the purpose is for you to continue to serve humanity and to serve God. You cannot be a servant of God if you cannot give thanks to him. The purpose of being here is to perform our duty as Christians, by giving thanks to God", Obasanjo added. SOURCE

COVID-19: Eight months after, FG fails to insure health workers

The Story
Nigerian health workers have decried the delay in the commencement of life insurance for frontline health workers combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

What was the original arrangement on it?
As part of government's response to the pandemic, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mr Boss Mustapha, had in April 2020 announced the government's plan for a special health care insurance, “which is life insurance,” for health workers.

How about the plan now?
According to The Punch newspaper, President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Innocent Ujah; and that of the National Association of Resident Doctors, Dr Aliyu Sokomba, expressed the health workers' frustration in separate interviews, saying there is no specific time for the implementation of the scheme. “There is a committee that is working on it. The NMA committee is interfacing with the government. They have not given me feedback so I don’t have an update. They (the government) said they have some insurance companies they need to involve. We are waiting for the outcome but to the best of my knowledge, it has not commenced", Uhah said.

How has the pandemic impacted the health workers?
Attention has continually been drawn to the risk health workers are exposed to in handling the pandemic, especially with worries over a second wave of infection that has killed many health workers in line of duty. The NMA Chairman, FCT chapter, Enema Amodu, had last Friday stated that 20 doctors died within the penultimate week, adding that the figures kept increasing daily. Speaking on the insurance, Ujah said “It should have taken off before now. We are not the implementers. We will continue to justify why doctors must be put on life insurance because of the risk.”

Stating that the health workers will continue in their commitment and dedication, Ujah insisted that there is need for support from government and other stakeholders. The NARD president, Aliyu Sokomba, also said when the association contacted government on the subject, it was claimed that insurance companies had already been instructed to disburse the funds for this purpose. However, Sokomba said he was not aware of any deceased doctors’ families who benefited from the insurance package. SOURCE

SCANDAL

Paternity scandal: Over 1,927 demand FCMB MD’s sacking, bank begins probe

The Story
About two thousand people have demanded for the sacking of the Managing Director of First City Monument Bank, Adam Nuru.

Why?
This is coming after the story of a paternity scandal involving him and an ex staff of the bank, Moyo Thomas, went viral online. Users were shocked as the story trended on social media over the weekend, with several people asking that Nuru be relieved of his job for his role in an alleged infidelity with the said ex staff, an affair which allegedly led to the death of Moyo's estranged husband, Tunde Thomas.

That's sad, how did he die?
According to the story, the affair between Nuru and Moyo resulted in two kids, which Moyo's husband, Tunde, believed to be his. However, Moyo reportedly left Tunde and travelled to the United States with the kids, informing him that the children were not his when she got to the US. Tunde was said to have been devastated by the information, and was down with stroke but later recovered. He reportedly tried to put the matter behind and decided to remarry, but suffered a cardiac arrest and died two days to the introduction with his new girlfriend.

What's the argument for Nuru's sack?
The petition is requesting the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the FCMB board to dismiss Nuru on ethical grounds. The petition, posted on an online platform, change.org, had been signed by 1,927 persons as of 11pm on Saturday out of the 2,500 target. It read in part, “This is a case of gross misconduct based on ethical grounds and an unjustifiable economic oppression by the elites (Adam Nuru) against the less privileged (sic) in the society. The MD has been doing everything possible to sweep this case under the carpet". The petition called on the Central Bank of Nigeria as the apex regulator and the board of FCMB to investigate this for the integrity of the bank and Nigerian banking industry.

How has the bank responded?
In FCMB's response, the bank said its board of directors had commenced investigation into the matter to ascertain whether its code of ethics was violated. On whether Nuru would continue to act as MD while the investigation was ongoing, the bank’s spokesperson, Mr Diran Olojo, said, “That is the company’s position. I don’t want a situation whereby you quote me on something that is way out of my jurisdiction to speak.”

In its statement on the subject, the bank said it was aware of several stories circulating across several media platforms about its Managing Director, Adam Nuru, a former employee, Ms Moyo Thomas, and her deceased husband, Mr Tunde Thomas. “While this is a personal matter, the tragedy of the death of Mr Tunde Thomas and the allegations of unethical conduct require the bank’s board to conduct a review of what transpired, any violations of our code of ethics and the adequacy of this code of conduct ethics. This will be done immediately. We enjoin all our stakeholders to bear with us as we conduct this review and to please respect the various families involved", the statement read. SOURCE

Brexit Becomes Reality As UK Leaves European Union

The Story
Brexit, which has dominated UK's politics since 2016, has become reality.

Really?
Britain on Thursday finally severed its partnership(which lasted about five decades) with Europe, quitting the EU single market and customs union and going its own way after more than four years of a vote to leave the bloc. Prime Minister Boris Johnson - the face of the "exit" campaign - described it as an "amazing moment" for the country and played up his upbeat narrative of a "Global Britain" unshackled from rules set in Brussels.

Is this a good time to do that?
While the opposition has been critical of the move, especially at a time when economies are being encouraged to cooperate in the recovery from effects of the coronavirus pandemic, Johnson vowed that post-Brexit Britain, despite being battered by a surge in coronavirus cases, would be an "open, generous, outward-looking, internationalist and free-trading" country. "We have our freedom in our hands and it is up to us to make the most of it", he said.

What is the significance of this exit?
Britain had been in a standstill transition period with fractious talks to secure a free-trade agreement with Brussels, which was finally clinched on Christmas Eve. Now the transition is over, EU rules no longer apply. The immediate consequence is an end to the free movement of more than 500 million people between Britain and the 27 EU states. Customs border checks return for the first time in decades, and despite the free-trade deal allowing Britain continued access to Europe's nearly 450 million consumers, queues and disruption from additional paperwork are expected.

And the reactions?
There has always been a division of opinions on the subject, with some for and others against. At Eurotunnel in Calais, French officials have begun implementing the new formalities, starting with a truck coming from Romania carrying post and parcels. Driver Toma Moise, 62, said being the first subjected to the new rules was a "privilege", as Calais mayor Natacha Bouchart symbolically waved him through to the cross-Channel freight train. In another reaction, Matt Smith, managing director of HSF Logistics, which ships mainly fresh meat and chilled goods between Britain and Europe, said he was sending around 15 truckloads to the EU on New Year's Eve ahead of the changes. The government's new post-Brexit customs systems are largely untested and Smith was doubtful how his business would fare with the new paperwork. "We're not too sure to be honest, it seems to be a bit of a headache. There'll be delays along the line at some stage", he told AFP.

Britain is the first member state to leave the EU, which was set up to forge unity after the horrors of World War II. The 2016 referendum opened up abiding wounds between Leavers and Remainers, and ushered in years of political paralysis before Johnson took power last year, vowing to chart a future for Britain built on scientific innovation and new partnerships across the seas. While the EU tariff- and quota-free trade deal averted potential business chaos in the immediate future, fears have been expressed on how the divorce will play out in the long run. SOURCE

QUESTION & ANSWER

QUORA QUESTION:

When is logic dangerous?

Jackson Brownlee

Yesterday evening, I was having a massive argument with my mother. Not an unusual occurrence; but still an annoying waste of time nonetheless. We had been discussing who had been President of the United States after Lyndon Johnson. She was insistent that it had been Ford who came after Johnson, but I knew that it was Nixon.

The argument was getting pretty heated when my dad entered the room with a brilliant suggestion:

“Here’s an idea: Why don’t you guys just look it up?”

Both of our faces flushed; we had just spent twenty minutes arguing about something that could have been resolved nearly instantly. My mom took out her phone and Googled “Who was president after Lyndon Baines Johnson?”

Immediately, the answer was revealed: Richard Nixon. I felt pretty triumphant; having known the presidents of the U.S in sequential order. My mother, who has her Ph.D in history, was not happy that she was wrong. I wittingly suggested:

“Maybe they shouldn’t have given you that history degree!”

And instantly, I knew I had gone too far. My mother isn’t good with jokes, and she was already grumpy after having been incorrect about the presidents.

The point: Be logical in day-to-day life, but watch what you say. Sometimes your self-proclaimed “logic” will land you outside pulling weeds.

Shine bright,

Jackson
