The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC had said that its Result Viewing Portal (IREV) came under attack from across the world in the just concluded Ekiti and Osun Gubernatorial elections.
That can’t be true!
Yes, it is. INEC chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu disclosed this while delivering a keynote address at a conference on election result management organized by YIAGA Africa in Abuja.
He said the commission has recorded several attempts to hack the cyber security system of the Result Viewing Portal.
“Another technical concern for us is the repeated attacks to break through our cyber security system for the portal.
“Our engineers reported several cyber attacks on the portal during the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, some of them from as far as Asia. I am glad to note that all of them failed.” Yakubu said.
Does this mean the portal is not secured?
Not exactly. The INEC chairman expressed his confidence in the security of the IREV. In his words:
“However, while we are confident in the security solutions that we have deployed for the IREV and all our web presence, we must remain vigilant and continue to strengthen our defenses. We have tasked our engineers to do everything possible to fully protect the IREV and all our web resources.”
Professor Yakubu also noted that the commission has introduced new legal provisions, administrative procedures and technological innovations to improve election conduct in 2023.
