Kano Explosion: Police, residents disagree over cause

Residents of Kano were rocked by an explosion at the Aba/Court Road, Sabon Gari Quarters area of the city yesterday, with at least four persons already confirmed dead.

What caused the explosion?
The cause of the explosion has not been established, and while the police suggest that it was from a gas cylinder, residents in the area have expressed disagreement over its cause. The statement by the Police said that “Preliminary Forensic Analysis revealed a suspected Gas Cylinder Explosion with the recovery of Chemicals”.

What are the residents saying?
A female resident, who did not disclose her name, said it could not have been from a gas cylinder. “How can they say it’s a gas explosion? It’s not”, she said. “How can a gas explosion dismember a human and take him to metres far away?”, she asked, insisting that “it’s a suicide bomber who struggled to enter the school before the explosive got detonated”. “This is purely a bombing explosion, not gas,” she said.

Has the full impact been established yet?
No, rescue workers are still working at the site of the explosion. The Director-general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Habib, told reporters at the scene that people are feared trapped under a flattened building. Habib said some people have been taken to the hospital for treatment, and that details of the casualties will be released after the rescue workers conclude their work.
