The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Tuesday denounced senior officials of the executive arm of government for not appearing at the investigative hearing of the House’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Volume of Fuel Consumed Daily in Nigeria.
Why are they being invited?
The committee was set up to address the issue of fuel subsidy especially how much fuel we consume as a nation on a daily basis. Previously, the federal government had said N3trillion is required to pay for subsidies in 2022. But recently, the president sent another letter for them to approve N4trillion. So the committee would like to know exactly what the country consumes.
Who are the officials?
Some of the officials mentioned by the Speaker include Zainab Ahmed (Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning), Timipre Sylva (Minister of State, Petroleum Resources), Godwin Emefiele (Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria), Melee Kyari ( Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited), and Isiaku Abdullahi (Managing Director of the Petroleum Pipeline Marketing Company).
Why were the officials absent? What next?
There was no clear information on the reasons for their absence. The committee, which was chaired by Abdulkadir Abdullahi, has again summoned the Minister of Finance, GMD of the NNPC, MD of the PPMC, Accountant-General of the Federation, the CBN Governor, Minister of State, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance.
