Emefiele: “Nigerians can have a heart attack”

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has dismissed the concern of Nigerians over the APC presidential nomination form that was reportedly bought for him, as he suggested that he is not bothered, even if Nigerians have a heart attack.

Is that so?
Well, if you are surprised, you are not alone. After a meeting with president Mohamadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja, Emefiele spoke to newsmen and when the concern of Nigerians was raised, he dismissed the concern, saying, “let them have heart attacks. It’s good to have a heart attack.” He has been widely condemned by Nigerians for his hubris. The main opposition party, PDP, has also called for his resignation, arrest, and prosecution.

For what crime?
The confirmation of Emefiele’s membership in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has attracted condemnation from Nigerians. Speaking after a National Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, reiterated the party’s call for the immediate resignation, arrest, and prosecution of the CBN governor, for alleged manipulations and financial impropriety in the CBN which contributed to the collapse of the country’s economy.

Did the president not instruct aspirants in his cabinet to resign?
Yes, a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, with reference number SGF/OP/ I/S.3/XII/ 173, was issued to that effect. But when asked about how the president’s instruction related to him, Emefiele did not give a clear indication of what he intended to do. “There is no news now, but there will be news. You heard me, I said there is no news but there will be news”, he said.
